Rose wood belongs to the sandal wood genus, with beautiful colors and clear grains. ”With magenta flowers and a slight fragrance, its grains form stripes and other patterns.  Aged rosewood has twisting stripes while newer wood may have straight lines. Padauk wood is of high quality. Its side wood has a light color and contains delicate and pretty grains, suitable for carving. Many types of furniture in the Ming dynasty were made from old padauk wood.
